What is SNAP? SNAP helps low-income families buy the food they need for good health. SNAP benefits are provided on an electronic card that is used like an ATM or bank card to buy food at most grocery stores. Listed below is the income chart based on your household size.
Who can apply? SNAP is a program designed for people and families with low or no income. Only citizens and certain qualified alien non-citizens who are legally present in the U. S. may participate in SNAP. Most of these noncitizens have a 5-year waiting period before they may be eligible for the program. However, anyone can apply. Social security numbers must be provided for everyone applying for benefits. If you qualify, you receive your benefits within 30 days of application, or 7 days for expedited cases. Benefits are available the first of each month on the EBT (sun, sand & sea) card at 7:00 a.m.
How to apply for SNAP benefits? – To apply for SNAP, you must complete an application form. There are several ways to get an application form:
- Pick it up at a local SNAP office, or
- Call the local SNAP office to have an application mailed to you, or
- Print the form from the DHS website at www.dhs.gov.vi
Fill out the SNAP application form as much as you can. If you need help, ask the local SNAP worker or ask a friend. You can also ask the SNAP worker how you may qualify for the other programs we provide, which are listed below.
